New AT&T customer, one iPhone, one not--buy second one in a few months?

I want a 3G, and I would like to eventually buy one for my wife as well (presumably on a family plan). If I switch to AT&T and get an iPhone 3G and a free promotional phone, what will happen when I want to upgrade the wife to the 3g in a few months?

1. I have to pay the "non-upgrade" price. This would of course be a rather large disincentive to getting the second iPhone.

2. I can get the second iPhone at the lower price, but my contract is extended to 2 years from the date I buy the second iPhone.

3. I can get the second iPhone at the lower price, but my contract is extended another 2 years (about 4 years total!).

4. Something else?

None of these scenarios look very appealing. I'd be hard pressed to have to buy a phone for twice the price because I hadn't bought it a couple of months ago when I set up the account. Any suggestions?
