If you dont get a phone your upgrade will always be there.

The answers so far are many right, maybe not. They are all confused because the question is confusing.

Why is it confusing?? i currently have an at&t plan but i am leaving my family's plan to pay for my own.. I DO NOT want to buy another phone cause my iPhonee 5 is fine for now. But i want to know because I'm not getting a new phone on the NEW contract will i still have an upgrade available whenever i want it

no you won't. Youll have one in 2 years. Enjoy!

You don't need a contract. If you bring your own device you just sign up for month to month service. When you are ready to get a subsidized device, sign the 2 year agreement at that time.

So yes, you can use an upgrade whenever you want. Hope I'm understanding your question correctly...
