The new backlight is able to go *much* dimmer than previous models! I had an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 and I always wished the display could be dimmer. With the 3, it can.

I suppose it all has to do with the pixel density: the higher the pixel density, the less light passes through. I think there's just as much light as before, but it just doesn't pass through the display.

Sorry for the crappy pic, but here is a 1 vs a 3 on the lowest brightness. The difference is dramatic.
