Hi Friends,

I remember reading a couple weeks ago on MacRumors about a new SD card that sits flush in the new rMBP and was being pushed as the "best" option for SD card expansion on a macbook. I can't find the article now though. Does anyone know what brand I'm talking about? What brand would you personally recommend?

I am trying to decide if I need to get a 512 SSD when I get my macbook soon, or if I'll be able to save a little bit of money with the 256 and just get a 128 micro SD card when I need it.

Thanks!

NVM I found the link: https://www.macrumors.com/2014/05/23/transcend-jetdrive-lite/

would still love your alls thoughts on getting one of these down the line or upgrading to 512 now...

The downside to these is having a SD card inserted keeps your Macbook from entering the deep sleep hibernation mode when on battery power. What this means as a practical matter is that your system reverts back to regular sleep which goes through about 1% of battery life per hour of sleep, as opposed to up to 30 days battery life in hibernation.

If that is not an issue for you, these cards are great way to increase storage.

Was that not only on certain rMBP models though? Vaguely recall seeing something like that?

[Apologies for jumping in OP - was just curious about the hibernation issue i.r.o. cMBP's...]

FWIW - I have a 64gb inside a Nifty MiniDrive. Works a charm.

Not just Retina models. Any of the newer machines on this list support the "stand by" mode with the longer battery life.

Couldn't you eject it first?

Nope... just having it inserted will stop the stand by mode.

Here is the excerpt from the Apple support page.
