I’m a bit confused by the new camera button. In the video it looked like it actually is a button, ie it moves separately from the frame around it (as opposed to the ”fake” button that was the taptic Touch ID home button).

If that’s the case, then what’s the point in all the fancy engineering including pressure sensors and tapitic feedback - why not just make a normal mechanical button, just like on the cameras it’s supposed to emulate? Seems like pointless overengineering.

The Camera Control is a physical button with a touch sensitive surface...

It's a "fake", i.e. taptic button.

Edit: Apparently it's both.

Well, what’s your source for knowing it’s haptic? Lol Seems we are all assuming here
No, its clearly described in the keynote as well as many hands-on overviews.

“Let’s start with Camera Control, which is a physical button — it depresses into the case ever so slightly, with additional haptic feedback from Apple’s Taptic Engine to make it feel like a chunkier click.”

I suspect the "ever so slightly" is an illusion created by the taptic engine, like with the Home button since the iPhone 7.

Did Apple say it was a mechanical button? I thought maybe the reason they called it Camera ‘control’ (whereas with the action button they do refer to it as a button) is because it’s not actually a button. 🤷‍♀️

“A tactile switch enables the click experience”

Accompanied by a video of the button moving.

And like I said, MANY hands-on reviews clearly indicating it’s a physical button.

Amazing how unresourceful some people are @klasma

Here's another one, "not a physical press button":

@NotApplicable: "Click" doesn't mean that it's physical.
The term “tactile switch” is very indicative of physical movement. As is the video, both sourced from Apple itself. And the two additional sources I provided are you know, actual publications.

Give it up. It’s a physical button. With additional Taptic feedback. As I stated originally.

QED.

Jeez, a bunch of you need to chill out. Considering even journalists and YouTubers who have had hands-on are confused and there are videos and articles saying both it is physical and it isn’t, says it all, no need to act like someone us saying Jesus is real or not lol.

Either way it’s a stupid addition to the iPhone. With the useless stuff they’re adding we should be able to “build our own iPhone” like you can build your own vehicles on car websites

How is it a stupid addition to the iPhone? From a photography standpoint it is one of the coolest features I have seen on a smartphone related to photography especially when they add the partial press to focus lock like an actual camera.
