Wife's MacBook charger has just started sparking and looks dangerous so need to get a new one as cheaply as possible. Part of me objects to spending anything on it when I could just get her a new MacBook for 1000 euro and the charger will be about 90 and the battery is knackered.

But what are my options ? App Store sells a MagSafe that looks the same and says 60w MagSafe for MacBook Pro. Is it the same and can I get a cheaper one ?

The Apple Store will sell you the right one if you tell them the model. I wouldn't try any other brand. Too many horror stories from cheaper third-party chargers.

Don't "go cheap" here.
Too many of the "Apple" chargers you see on eBay are non-Apple "knockoffs" that scrimp on the innards -- can be downright dangerous.

Check OWC (other world computing).
They claim to sell Apple-original MagSafes, and the price (while not the same as the ebay cheapies) is still good.
I bought one from them for my sister.
(no financial interest other than being a paying customer)
