Chinese have a new chip called the Long March that is rated at 100GHZ performance. Although 18 months off from market debut, this will trounce the competition. The only thing close is the upcoming PS3 chip set to debut about the same time. Although the PS3 is more proprietary, the Chinese Long March reports to be pin compatible with the Intel P4 and will be able to run most of the software on the planet that is Linux or Windows based.

Lawsuits by Intel may follow. The article didn't mention if the Chinese had a liscense. But heh, that has never stopped them before in pirating our technology.

Pete :)

If this is true it would be great, I expect it is true, but the chip is probably 10Ghz not 100Ghz. There are not really any reson why they could not do this since they are basically copying Intel/Amd etc and improving their designs, which comapnies are not legally allowed to do. It is basically like AMD INTEL IBM and the china working together (even though they are not).

From article:
Using 128-bit technology, the architecture, codenamed 'Long March', could deliver performance of up to 100GHz in as little as 18 months, say researchers.Built on a new 90 nm process, the Long March chips feature 1Gb level 2 cache and prototypes have been demonstrated running at 5GHz with no special cooling.
Sounds like nothing more than theory and speculation to me.
"Could deliver"? There's nothing certain about that.
"prototypes have been demonstrated running at 5GHz"? There's a big gap between 5Ghz and 100Ghz.

I'll believe it when I see it. Everything I've read about the Chinese microprocessor industry is that they are years behind but they are commited to pursuing independence from American companies.

1 GB of L2 cache seems like ALOT!!! I mean **A-L-O-T**!!!!! If it's actually true, I bet these chips will be only for very high end workstation or for server market. Could you imagine how much will it cost….Holly cr**p…..1 GB of L2!!! By the way, the fact that they are pin compatible with the P4 motherboard is tremendously irrelevant. Putting a chip this FAST in P4 motherboard will be like putting a Boeing jet engine in a mini cooper!! Oh well, I’m very tired so probably I’m just writing nonsense. Oh well.

If it runs at 100 GHz on 90 nm fabrication, how many seconds does it run? Something that fast on what, for that speed, would be a huge scale, would be extremely hot and should burn itself out within seconds.

10 GHz would be a tough one, let alone 100 GHz. It just doesn't make any sense.

And if the Chinese were capabable of this, I'm sure that the engineers at Intel would be as well. I'd love to know what they're saying to this little bit of news.

Oh, and they forgot to mention its powered by their new Cold Fusion generator.....;)

For me, somebody who as worked on sampler code since i m eleven ( i know it s only 7 years ), and the hardware related cpu knowledge i got in that time, this is some kond of not researched bull ****, reported by somebody who hasn t either got an idea of cpu heat problems, of their complexity or of any other problem related to a frequence like that.
sorry if my english is not understandable :)

Your English is quite understandable, even if it's bad enough to make you look American. :D j/k

What the hell.

Okay now, even if you post lame topics... from the inquier that is no reason to be banned. Or is that some weird 'custom' title and someone is getting back at him?
