I know this is like 99.999% surely not going to happen but I would love to see apple take what they have learned about the MagSafe adapter and the iPad smart cover and create sone sort of a magnet cable that can charge the iPhone without the need for an actual port like it has now. Come on apple, stop making me clean my iPhone connector port!!!!

i want to see a phone without the docking port, just wireless for transfers and it could charge using the headphone jack just like the iPod shuffle.

Actually 99.9999% surely not going to happen.

But it would be nice, except the iPod connector dock is universal with all of Apple's iDevices. Apple has to update all of them in one year, and i guess it'll start with the iPad in Spring.

Wont happen. Without the dock connector, all of the accessories for iPod/iPhone are obsolete. Apple charges a tidy sum of money for licensing it. What's more likely is an inductive charger built in.

That better not happen - I don't feel like upgrading my car just to be able to use an iPhone 5 for music :p

Hmm interesting concept, but the only thing that I agree with the above poster is the inductive charging back built in. iPhones don't need magsafe because it's not a product that people would normally trip over and cause the iPhone to fall and shatter, I hope.

I didnt mean have a MagSafe for tripping reasons, instead it would have it to make connections possible without a port existing. Think of induction charging and MagSafe having a baby... ;-)

Still waiting for the mini USB port to show up for EU iPhones.

I seem to remember that whole power adapter compliance BS that passed in the EU.
Still curious how Apple plans to handle that.

I sort of expected the iPad to have a magsafe port and was surprised when it did not. Then i figured apple would make two. One with one with out. Like an iPad and an iPad pro. IDK

Wasn't there a patent application about this recently? I could be wrong, but I thought there was. That would be much better... I'm sure all of us have knocked over our phone more than once because of the cord.
Besides that obvious benefit, it would also be a visual benefit. It would look cleaner.

The phone itself doesnt have to have mini usb, it just has to be compatible with it. iPhone wont have the mini usb port , an adapter is more likely.

The same dock connector that's just magnetized would be excellent.

you don't think it will ever happen?

cause if you think that, that's dumb. eventually they're going to do away with the design, and while they would have to change the port on an array of products, they have to start somewhere, sometime.

That's some good forward thinking for the future. So.. you think that port will be around until the end of man?? C'mon.

Not to the end of all men, just you!

I would love to be able to sync and charge with a magsafe type connector but there are billions of dollars of accessories that would be trash. It may not be around for ever but it will not be happening on the iPhone5:D

i think we will see something new in the next few years..

My recollection is that they were allowed to go with an adapter to mini USB.

Interesting idea, but I can see issues with it.

The MagSafe connector has a magnet on your MacBook.
Now for it to work with the iPhone they would need to put a somewhat powerful Magnet at the bottom of the phone.

Now the problems with that....

1. Change in your pocking will start to stick to your phone causing scratches on your phone.
2. The material of the phone MAY need to be modified for the magnet to work properly.
3. Space is already tight in the iPhone, the magnet will take up valuable space.
