Hello all,

I've noticed that in tutorials on upgrading the cpus in a flashed 4,1 (dual cpu models) the cpus are de-lidded. I was wondering if I needed to buy de-lidded models, or if I could just use the regular xeons. (Delidded X5680 xeons are nearly $100 for a pair, however lidded models are $40 for 2.)

This is one of the most discussed topics about 2009 Mac Pro on this forum, you can see both main points of view easily with a search and you can always buy the lidded Xeons and de-lid yourself - tutorials and videos about the whole process are easy to find.

Anyway, if you install lidded Xeons with a dual CPU tray you are highly susceptible of damaging the CPU sockets. Faulty RAM slots are the most common after effect of using a lidded Xeon and is a nightmare to repair, if even possible.

Personally, I would never install a lidded Xeon with a dual CPU early-2009 and a lot of people here with experience repairing Mac Pros thinks exactly the same - is too easy to damage the CPU tray. Just one more turn than the required number and the socket is forever trashed.

Just an update to this thread-

I have a spare rx 580 2048sp 4gb laying about. Will it work with the dual 2.93ghz xeons until I can upgrade them? I'd like to get OCLP running asap before upgrading.

Not supported by macOS, you have to re-flash it back to RX 570.

Nothing to do with the Xeons, macOS GPU drivers does not support this fake RX 580, these are RX 570 GPUs flashed to be named as RX 580, the PCIe id of the fake is not present in the drivers.

Alright, good to know.

The rx 580 I have was my first gpu, (XFX 4gb) so it's kinda sentimental.

Will any rx 480 8gb work? They don't go for much and they seem good price to performance for OCLP

Yes, but RX 480 that have just one 6-pin PCIe power connector draw too much power from the PCIe slot and are known to damage the PCIe slot - Mac Pro PCIe slot killer, lot's of people damaged the PCIe slot overtime. Btw, is not just with Mac Pros, also happen with PCs.

Quick update:

Turns out that the rx 580 4gb I have is a 2304 XFX XXX model. Will it still work or will I need to flash it?

(Gpu-Z capture will be shown)
