Hey everyone,

I am currently an owner of the original iPhone, and my contract will expire in the next month or so. Thus, I am looking to upgrade to the 3GS before I go back to school.

Despite attending a Big 10 college, AT&T does not have wireless in the campus town or anywhere near it. As far as I know, there are no tangible plans to bring 3G to the neighborhood. I know the data plans rose by $10 for the 3G phones compared to the original model, and I am guessing that this is for the 3G service. Assuming this is correct, am I required to pay the extra $10/month for my data plan even though I would almost never be in a 3G network area? It seems dumb that I should pay for a service that I do not yet have access to, especially being a somewhat poor college student. If AT&T does require this, has anyone in the same position had any success at avoiding this extra fee?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Nope, if you get the 3Gs, you will pay $30/month for data. No way around this.

To everyone that is unwilling to pay the data: With the 3G(s) comes a price, if you are unwilling to pay the data plan, then maybe the phone isn't for you. That is all.

You can always unlock it and go to tmobile and pay 10 for data. 3g for $30 that does not include tethering is a rip off imo.

Arguably, the $10 rise in data plan cost of the 3G/3GS iPhones over the original 2G model isn't a charge for 3G service - after all, there are many markets where 3G is not available and not even 'coming soon'. Arguably, the extra cost is to help recover the subsidy of the 3G/3GS models over the period of time they are likely to be in service.

Given the 3G service map, a large proportion of the US is not covered.
