Does anyone know the step by step sequence of formatting my new external HD and partitioning it for using Time Machine? I guess Time Machine controls the backup?
I have a 2011 MacAir.

When you connect the external HDD the first time, a dialog appears asking you, if you want to use the HDD for Time Machine. If you confirm that, it will be formatted correctly, deleting any already existing data on it, thus if you already have some data on it you want to preserve, do not confirm the question.
Copy your data off and then proceed as shown in the following guide:

Thanks for the quick reply, a real life saver. Iwas just confused. You set me on right path I'm going to set up the HD this weekend when time is avalable...
