Hello. I'm running 10.14.5 on an early 2013 MacBook Pro 15". Have been using 3 separate usb Seagate drives, 3Tb each, for photo storage and backups of same. I just purchased 3 new Seagate usb drives, 8Tb each, to replace the 3Tb units. They came formatted for PC, and when I reformatted them for the Mac, two will not mount.

My understanding is that APFS formatting for external HDs is now supposed to work in Mojave, so that's what I tried on the first one. It mounted fine out of the box, but I got a failure in Disk Utility when erasing and reformatting in APFS. Would not remount.

On the second drive, I tried formatting in OS Extended (journaled), which is how my existing 3Tb drives are formatted. It worked fine. I then reformatted it again, this time in APFS, and it worked fine. (It now appears I am committed to APFS on that drive, as there is no longer an option for OS Extended.)

Figuring that the first drive was simply defective, I tried formatting the third new drive directly into APFS, and it failed to remount, just like the first one.

Did I just luck out with two crappy drives, or is there some inherent misstep in going from PC formatting (I think it was NTTS or something like that) directly to APFS?

Ah. My bad, I don't have defective drives. I did not understand the APFS naming structure of volumes/containers/partitions, etc.
