I am so glad they finally put this in. I am always missing / sleeping through important notifications. Says in the firmware release that you can repeat up to two additional times on notifications.

yeah i think its really good, especially with the very short vibrate time

and the feature that removes all data on 10 unsuccessful code attempts is good as well

As promised, Apple has released the iPhone 2.1 firmware through iTunes this morning. The iPhone 2.1 contains the following updates as listed by Apple:

- decrease in call set-up failures andcall drops
- significantly improve battery life for most users
- dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- improve email reliability, notable fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
- faster installation of 3rd party applications
- fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
- improved performance of text messaging
- faster loading and searching of contacts
- improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
- repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
- option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
- Genius playlist creation

is it just me or the signal has significantly improved since the update... i was barely getting 1-2 3G signal at home and now full 5 bars...

Phone may be getting same signal strength and just showing more bars now to make people complain less?

I think it's the way bars are registering. In field mode I would have about -91 or so on 3G in my room and it would show me 2 bars. Now it still reads -91 but gives me between 3 and 4 bars.

I don't know enough about the numbers to know which is a better representation of -91, but I will say that for me so far the signal is the same, but I haven't left my room yet. (only 6:50am here)

anyone know how to switch on those two repears on notifications? or is that standard now?

In field test mode the strength of the signal is in dB, more exactly how much the signal strength has dropped from the time it reaches your phone. So the higher the (-xxx) is the lower the signal. So if the tower puts out 200dB signal strength and your phone registers -91, the the signal is 109dB in strength.

I wouldn't be surpised they just changed the "bar" readout to make people feel like they have a stronger signal.

me neither.
I can't find it and I sent myself a message from another phone and it only alerted me once - so it's not turned on automatically.

So the SMS alert is now:
1) immediately upon receipt of the message (as normal)
2) after 5 minutes (if the phone hasn't been unlocked already)
3) after 10 minutes (if the phone hasn't been unlocked already)

Is this correct??

Exactly. I'm thrilled that 2.1 is so great, but annoyed that it has taken two months to have an iPhone 3G that functions as advertised.

But at least the issues are being fixed. I spent 2 years with a Palm Treo 680 that only had one update (that actually made the thing more unstable).

So far Apple is doing the right thing by investing development resources in fixing issues and adding features.

I only let it go to the 1st repeat after 5 min, so I don't know how long until the second repeat.
