Earth (for now)
If my MacBook is off, when I open the lid, it will automatically boot up. It’s a feature, not a bug.

Personally I don’t see the draw of this feature. I suppose others might like it but IMO Apple should add a system preference for this.

There is a Terminal command to shut this off but it seems odd to have to resort to the Terminal for this.

Why would you open it without using it? Wonder at the flatness of the keyboard?
You’ve never ever opened the lid without turning it on? Be honest.

Anyways, why would you open it without turning it on? eg. To clean the screen, or a family member opened it.

Never. I haven't had a reason to open my machine without using it. I only clean the screen when I use it, so I can see where the smudge is.

? It’s a heluvalot easier to see smudges with the screen off. With the screen on, the smudges are hidden. You only clean the screen with the screen on?

If you open the lid to clean the screen, for the new MacBook a few seconds later the screen comes on, which makes it more difficult to clean the screen.

can't you have the laptop open, then power down the unit, then clean the screen?

I've also never opened my MacBook without the intention of using it. I do agree most things should be customizable, but this is something I haven't been concerned about.

Yes - Why would I clean the screen enough to eat of it? I just need it to be clean so I don't see any smudges.

There's a terminal command which can disable this for you -- google it I'm too lazy to find the link

I don't have a new MacBook that does this. But if I did, I completely agree with OP. If my laptop turned on when I opened it up I think it would annoy me enough to buy a different laptop if I couldn't disable that "feature".

Some airports ask you to open the lid; I assume that it doesn't automatically shut down again when you close the lid so that adds an extra step to an already-hectic boarding process.

I really like this feature. What's the point of the extra step of pressing the button to turn on? You can still shut it down with the lid open if you want to clean the screen (easier when off).

This feature seems related to the new boot cycle, as well. On the '16/'17 MBP (and '17 rMB IIRC), turning it on completely loads the OS, so when you enter your password, you go straight to the desktop and can start working. As opposed to entering your password, waiting for the OS to finish booting, then getting to work. <--Annoying!
