New FW drive :)

Hi Guys

I just bought a new 1TB firewire drive, to use as a scratch disk but also external storage. Just wondering how would be best to set this up? Would it be a case of plug and play and set everything i use to use that drive as a scratch it will only be FCPX / Photoshop / Premeire

or partition it, 50/50 one half scratch and other half data?

ill back it up every so often to my nas so not worried about RAID
