I've been reading online that the Pioneer 8X superdrive in the new G5s can use dual layer media with only a firmware upgrade.

Talk amongst yourselves. :)

Hi,
It's highly unlikely pioneer will release the firmware upgrade that enables dual-layer burning for the older drives
I'm afraid you'll have to get the new 16-speed DVR-A08XL for that

I'm sure that someone will pick up where Pioneer/Apple left off. Know how the DVR-104 has only 1x support on 4x media when it should be 2, and Apple never fixed it? Someone did, so apart from fixed speeds I also have unlimited region changes. Just keep your eyes peeled.

At CES pioneer showed how the even the A06 (quad speed burner) could burn dual-layer
Maybe when the A08 is available someone will be able to make a hack for the older generation based on the new firmware.
We'll see...........

Sorry, I can't find link to what I was reading now.

I also read that while iDVD doesn't support dual layer at this point, the latest Toast software does...and maybe it works on the current superdrive?

If someone can confirm this, let us know.

2x? Really?

Link? Info? I have one on my iMac, but it only can do the pokey 1x. 2x would be VERY nice. Christmas in July, eh?

Dual Layer!!

Does this mean it will work in the superdrive in the new 1.25Ghz eMacs too.

Will the firmware update be applied and work if installed using Virtual PC?

Anybody dared try to update theirs yet??

i daredn't... :(

Thats all fine and dandy. In fact thats awesome. The only problem is that there are no native Mac apps that can burn dual layer disk. Even if you have the functionality you wouldnt be ble to use it natively...

nowhere on that website does it say the 107 can, here's the official changelist, it says it can playback DVD+R DL Media, not write it, I have this drive and I am using the mac version DVRFlash perfectly fine to update the firmware on my DVR-107 when new firmware comes out,
here's the site

EDIT: Sorry, just re read the first post and I read it as being able to burn them but in fact it was my mistake, post is still relevantish though

Dual layer recording is useless right now. 2.4x recording speeds, horrible compatibility and media that is over $15 if you can find it. Far too rich for my blood when DVD-5 is a buck or less per disc.
