New Hard Drive, Booting from CD black screen

Hey,

I have just put a new 500GB HDD into my macbook pro, and need to restore my image from my old hard drive back onto it.

So I put in the installer CD, the pressed Alt, and selected the CD, there was then the Apple logo with the spinning gray circle... grate, then the screen goes black...

Anyone know whats happened? or how to fix it?
