New Hard drive

(The new drive is 1TB) wd I just put a new hard drive in a imac 2010 21". I'am unable to format hard drive
in disk utility when i click partition tab format (Mac OS Extended Journaled ) is not highlighted and the same with the erase tab.
I could create a raid but the create button is off.
