New HD monitor only has 1920x1080 interlaced option

Hi, I just bought a new monitor during the cyber monday event. When it is hooked up to my mac throught DVI (DVI to HDMI converter) it only has 1920x1080 (interlace) in system preferences. It looks horrible in that setting, The other option would be 1600 x 900 which looks great, but this monitor can support 1080p.

It is a Sceptre 24" HD MOnitor/TV. Any help would be great.
