new iBook Hard drive

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my 30GB iBook G4 Hard drive and just want to check that this one will be ok:

do i just need to get a standard 2.5" IDE (non SATA!) drive, not super thin?

Also it's 5400rpm, whereas my current 30GB is 4200rpm. Will i see much of a difference in the performance of my iBook with this faster drive?

What is the process for installing the operating system on the blank drive. Do i just fit the new drive, push the power button and follow the instructions or do i need to do something else?

You'll only need the standard (not the super thin).

Probably won't notice much access speed dif.

You'll need an OS CD or DVD. You may have to access disk utility from the OS install CD to format it (depending on where you get it/if it's been used already). Once formatted, boot from the install CD and it will take you through.

I'm not sure if you know this, but a Hard Drive replacement in an iBook is an EXTREMELY long process. It's also semi-difficult and if you haven't done it before, you could ruin the appearance of your machine. (I did this a few years ago)
I am also upgrading the HD in my iBook (standard 30GB) to a 160GB 5400rpm drive from Newegg.com, can't think of the brand at the moment, Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi are pretty good. Anyways, I'm paying my local mac place to install mine for me for $80. Trust me, if I'm paying someone $80 do it, it must be difficult. Just something to consider. Good luck!

Taking the iBook apart to replace the drive isn't too hard, but putting it back together correctly is.

Good point. Probably more difficult to get it back together than to take it apart. Except for the G3's with paint on the inside of the case, because it scratched off on the seams even with a spudger.
