Hi, I just bought a new iMac 27" that is going to replace my four year old MacBook Pro. Now because my four year old machine has a lot of junk that I did not want on my new computer, I decided to forgo the migration assistant using time machine. Also having heard tragic stories of failed migration assistant migrations, I figured I would better do it right manually than let the computer screw things up.

So, here's the setup.

My itunes library is entirely on an external hard drive. For now, I have just copied the itunes library file from the /music/itunes folder over to the new computer and plugged in the external hard drive. I now have access to everything. I could simply continue using this to prevent having multiple copies of an enormous library.

The more complicated(to me at least) part is the photo library.
Part of my photo library is on the external hard drive and part on the internal hard drive. My main software for photo library management and editing is Lightroom. iPhoto library is referencing some of the original photos from their location and has its own copies for others. I don't know how I should go about moving these over so iPhoto on the new machine does not have to go in and rescan all the photos for faces. Having to go through thousands of photos again and tag faces would suck. Any help?
