I have the new iMac 21.5, I have a set of Altec Lansing speakers which I used with my Windows PC.

Is there any way of using these with the iMac?

I tried plugging the jack into the headphone socket, but no sound except from built in ones.

I cannot find a configuration option for external speakers.

Can anyone advise please?

Did you plug them all the way in? Silly question I know, but on my imac the connector has to click before the computer recognises that there is something plugged into it.

If you go to System Preferences > sound > output it should say Internal Speakers then change to External Speakers or headphones when you plug your speakers in.

Thank you jaglad, that was the problem. Once I had pushed the jack fully home then system preferences shows output as "Headphones"

Now getting full sound from my current speaker system. Much better than the built in, especially the bass, which was frankly rather tinny.
