new imac intel - sound output device problem

Hi all,
I have a problem with my brand new imac.

When I plug in headphones or external speakers, it works for about 20 seconds and then dies.

In system preferences, sound:
it automatically switches from 'line out' 'built in output' to 'digital out' 'built in output' about 20 to 60 seconds into the song and dies instantly.
any ideas
?
