Well just got my new iMac I ordered on Nov. 1. Sales person when I asked her said it would fore sure come with mavericks. Well just got it today and not only did it still have mountain lion on it, it had the 10.8.4, which then had to be upgraded to 10.8.5 first. Cheez just how old is this thing?

If you really want to know what model it is...  > About This Mac > More Info.

As for an older OS... just download Mavericks from the store? Or is that just too inconvenient or something

All new iMacs come with Mountain Lion, it's not just you. I called up Apple about this the other day and asked why my new iMac didn't come with Mavericks. They didn't have an answer when new computers would start coming preloaded with it. Don't worry, your computer is new!

Call AppleCare and they will instruct you on not only how to get Mavericks but your free iWorks apps. You have 90 days of free AppleCare support, it's time to begin using it.
