Check this link out LG are launching a 21.9 inch 29inch IPS LED Panel

The 29-inch EA93 is a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor. The ultrawidescreen display has a pixel resolution of 2560x1080, optimized for “movie watching”. Most movies today are produced in a format very close to 21:9 and therefore a 21:9 panel eliminates black bars at the top and bottom. LG says that the monitor is also aimed at multitasking, as it can act as a “4-way split screen”. Sources can be inputted through DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI.

Will this be used in the next iMac?

That ratio just looks unnatural. It fits in a movie theatre, but not for everyday use.

I can see the idea of it in terms of watching movies and if your doing a lot of stuff with side by side information , but I don't see it for an iMac.

Mainly because the 21:9 ratio is a smaller distribution format. the 16:9 format is so pervasive now and is a principle iTunes format for media including TV now as well.

If I ever buy a 21:9 screen, it would be a movie projector instead of LCD or static monitor.

This product is suitable for movie watching, and that's about it. Other than that it would gives you headache and eye strain due to overly wide screen-estate. You have to move your eyes and head occasionally. You do not want to work like that. Believe me.

Not to mention resolution is terrible for the size, it's still 1080 .. on steroid. I can't understand why manufacturers don't go above 1080p for 24" or more diagonal display size. It's a computer display, not HDTV. So WHY?

Just thinking how many of the same comments we made when computers started making the transition to 16:9 not that long ago?

After seeing one in the shops I'd love a future iMac to have a 21:9 screen and maybe curved and it would be perfect to stop the distortion you'd get seeing an arms length away from one of these.

Maybe the 2015 iMac with 32" (4200x1800) 21:9 curved OLED :)

Yes I know this thread has not been used in months.

the problem is that ATSC video is 4:3 or 16:9... computers started at 16:10 and slowly conformed to the 16:9 format... 16:9 is a useful format in that DVD, BR and HDTV is encoded at this format... watching 21:9 movies would be the only thing that monitor was good for... for TV not so much...

So basically that's a 27" iMac screen (2560 pixels across) with the bottom chopped off (1080 pixels vertical instead of 1440). No thanks.

First if/when Apple adopts 21:9 I'm sure there will be higher resolution so maybe up to 2000 high and bigger screens.

Second with a wider screen you could have more programs open side-by-side. The picture wouldn't be stretched it would be wider.

Third any top iMac would likely be 32-35" or more with 21:9 to maintain the same hight as we have today.

I'm not saying Apple will do this with the next iMac but it will happen, if people didn't want more screen space then why do they buy 2nd and 3rd monitors?

Uh, you are aware that only a tiny percentage of iMac buyers will add on additional monitors, right? Remember, iMac's are *consumer* desktops, not machines designed for pro users who don't just want extra screen space but need it. Sure, they do get used in that capacity (hence the ability to add on an extra screen or two if needed) but it's not their primary audience.

Of course this is all speculation but I highly doubt Apple would swap to a 21:9 ratio. While it's fine for certain movies there's a LOT of content around that's either 16:9 (pretty much all modern television) or 4:3. 21:9 sets have been around for a few years and have been a niche product at best even amongst the home cinema faithful. I also don't see Apple increasing the size of the iMac much past where it is now, a 35" 21:9 model would be about 32" wide versus the current 16:9 27" model's 23"... that's just far too big for most people to comfortably use on a desk.

No, sorry, but I don't see any compelling reason to switch to a 21:9 form factor. Higher resolution displays are coming, certainly, but the compromises of a 21:9 screen are too high and the potential market who would really use the extra width far too small. To be honest I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Apple ended up discontinuing the 27" machine in a few years once cpu & gpu power / efficiency is good enough to let them put high end gaming kit into the 21.5" model.

I very much doubt Apple will stop making the bigger 27" iMac, for many 21.5" (or 24") is just too small, even if it has a retina LCD to bump up the DPI. The only thing holding Apple back from making a bigger iMac right now is no one makes a bigger LCD with the same DPI as the current 27" 2560x1440 we have today.

As for 21:9 we're all entitled to our opinion and right now if you want one you can get it for any headless Mac like the Pro or Mini and I'm sure it could be used as an external for the iMac and laptops.

Each to their own.

A 'wider' screen does not necessarily give you more real estate. What matters is total resolution in both directions.

Any resolution you come up with for a 21:9 ratio screen, you could simply add more pixels to the bottom to make it back to 16:9 and actually have more usable space than the 21:9 screen.

16:10 and 16:9 work fairly well for a wide variety of tasks, I don't see a real reason to change from that for the built-in display for every iMac.

I agree and I also agree 1080 tall is not enough for this size screen but as I already said higher DPI (and bigger desktop) screens are likely to follow given time.

Each to their own.

Also I have no problem with 16:9 over 16:10.

hss1, I have just one question for you. What made you think these displays will ever be in iMacs?

Hasn't this Dell Ultrasharp U2913WM been out for a while? What's the issue? It seems like a somewhat elegant way to have 2 20in monitors in 1. If you don't need a super large screen, but are used to 2 monitors, this could be nice for you.
