New imac so slow on usb transfer

hi, i have a new imac, and the usb data transfer is so slow, should this be correct? i mean it took one minute to copy 1.6mb to a usb stick. Also my trash folder is doing something strange, i am trying to delete a load of stuff from it and it takes ages... it told me i have 160,000 items to delete but, i dont have that many files to delete there, on a physical count i have like 120 files to delete.

Any ideas on these two points??
