I just yesterday bought a new iMac and changed the desktop from the Apple image that was on it to one of my photos. It was fine all day and then sometime in the night updates were installed and this morning my photo was gone and the original desktop was back. Why?

You would be better helped in a different form since this is mean for older macs. Anyway, if any other files were deleted, you may have an issue. If not, then you can just put the picture back. It might have been reset in an update, not a big deal.
