I just got a new iMac (20" 2.4ghZ 500gig hd, 1gb ram(upgraded by me to 4)) which is for christmas.

However when I turn it on there is a loud "whirring" sound which I would guess is the fan, over time it quietens down but then it's loud again after it's been turned off for a while.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has this (if its common) and if its worth contacting apple about?

Unless rendering video or something, an iMac should be basically silent. Definitely worth contacting Apple as you are missing out on one of the great features of an iMac.

Wow, Christmas comes early wherever you're living! ;)

Congratulations.

About the only time I ever actually heard the fan on my 24" or the 20" iMac that preceded it was while running SMC firmware updates.

I would definitely get that checked out if its noticeable.

It's very noticable, it sounds like a fan thats clicking against something. I tried resetting the SMC as it says on the Apple support site but that didn't fix it. Now to figure out how to contact apple :p
