New install, trying to free space

I'm sure this is here already, bit searches are not finding me exactly what I'm looking for. It's been a while since I had a Mac that I cared about free space, but I just purchased a MacBook Air with a 128GB drive.

I used to run several programs to make extra space, delete languages and unused files, etc. is this still necessary/useful/possible?

What does everyone do with a new Mac to get it setup just right? Anything, or nothing?

Yes. While the location of some files may have changed, it still applies.
