I upgraded tiger to leopard in decemeber using the "upgrade" option. After doing this, a few things bugged me. Safari crashed quite often. Mail had some little quirks in it. My macbook pro wouldn't sleep on it's own [give it did have this problem in tiger]. switching from word/excel to firefox using apple + tab was awkwardly slow. booting took much longer and was too windows like for me. these are a few of the noticeable issues I had. there were more, but that list will suffice.

So, the other night, I convinced myself that a format and install of 10.5 was the way to go. So, I backed up my important files and found my install CD's for iWork and MS office. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled leopard and let me tell you, there is an amazing difference. booting is quicker. apps run quicker. files drag and drop quicker. OS X "just works" again and I'm very pleased. My mbp even goes to sleep on it's own again! quite lovely.

And I have much more free space on the hard drive. Before the format, I have ~34 gb free. Now I have ~56 gb free. However, I am currently reinstalling iLife 06, so that might change somewhat. oh wait, I didn't put my pictures back on this drive yet, but that's on 6 gb or so.

Still, I am very pleased with formating and freshly installing leopard. And it was so easy to do. I've done this kind of thing with windows before and it's a bear. This took a few hours, but wasn't difficult to do. And I got everything set up just the way it was. I even imported all of my mail messages back in to their filters.

Two thumbs up for leopard (finally.)
