I've just read on another forum that the 80GB G3 will be slower than the the G2.

I am after an 80 GB SSD purely due to cost and i dont store that much stuff (i dont do much movie editing or torrent). 80 GB for me is the sweet spot.

I have been waiting for the G3 as the write speed is 70 mbs higher than the G2 according to anandtech.

Can anyone comment on this please?

info from: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2138394&page=4

Is there a real possibility that the forthcoming G3 25nm X25-M 80GB will be a bit slower than the G2 34nm X25-M 80GB, due to error correction and other 25nm-related issues?

answer: yes

Most people are just scared of 25nm NANDs because of the OCZ fiasco. The reason why their 25nm SSDs are slower is that OCZ used 8GB NANDs instead of 4GB NANDs, meaning that they cut the channels to half which was seen in the performance. Using the same amount of channels with 25nm NANDs should not affect the performance noticeably. In the end, it's up to the controller.

OCZ Vertex 3 uses 25nm NANDs and it provides +500MB/s.

Has there been any mention of whether there will be 1.8" G3's?

I couldn't confirm this on the Intel website.
