New iPad Air - headphone jack issues

When I first went to plug my headphones in, I noticed it was a loose fit. The connection stops a lot, and they won't stay in. I took a flashlight to look in the jack and there a white thing in the way, inside. This is extremely annoying since its brand new and there's already an issue. Is the white thing suppose to be there?

I don't have my iPad in front of me so I can't really answer the last part. That said, if your device is brand new and you are having problems like that, you really need to take it back to the Apple store and get another one. Keep in mind however, when mine was brand new, it took more force than expected to engage the plug. Could it be you simply didn't plug it in firmly? It goes through 2 sets of snaps when pushing it in.
