Hi
What is a more enjoyable experience - sole use is for web browsing -
the latest, basic bottom of the range model of iPad or a 1st generation 12" iPad pro?
Thanks!

Wait for the 10.2” iPad, likely arriving in the coming weeks.

I wouldn’t recommend a 12.9” iPad Pro for just surfing, but YMMV.

I have a 12.9" gen 1, if you can get it at a decent price it's still a great consumption device. Runs absolutely fluidly, the screen is fantastic, though a lot of the time everything just looks scaled up rather than more content being shown at once. Having said this, a new basic iPad will likely be supported with iOS longer, the 12.9 is now on it's 5th iOS version with 13, so it's very unlikely to get more than one further update (to 14) at the very most, even though I'm confident it could handle it. Overall I'd lean towards recommending the basic iPad unless you really value the bigger screen?

There might be a new entry level iPad with a slightly bigger screen available soon. Certainly not shown at the I-hone presentation but likely to be released later this year.

Thanks everyone for some really valid points. I will certainly wait until the end of the week until I make my decision.
The new purchase is purely to browse websites, magazines etc so I dont think I necessarily need the latest and greatest chip or software. I am currently using an iPad4 and haven't upgraded the iOS in years.
The 12" screen looks luxurious to me but a brand new iPad may be a more sensible option, especially if it has a slightly larger screen. Still, a tough choice..

The 11inch is but so is the 9inch, you may want to wait for the newer tech.

The real question is, where are you going to browse, at home keeping it on a stand or even keyboard? (then nothing is better than a 12.9), or on a sofa, while holding it, or outside of your house? (than a smaller version is better, lighter and easier to handle, in this case I would suggest the faster 10.5 pro used over a 2018 9.7 new). By the way the 10.2 might not come before a separate event in October and not in a couple of days.

The best web surfing device at the moment on earth is a 11” iPad Pro, not too small not too big. Can still use both hands on either side and hold it and type. And the speed is spot on.

I do agree, f you have to hold it. But I doubt james would like to put that kind of money in it. The closest thing would be an air 3 or 10.5 pro, whichever is cheaper.

I find the 12.9" iPad Pros too heavy and awkward for extended handheld use.

Agreed, and it's even better with the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio, but it's $$$.

Yup, the second best would be the 10.5" models, again with the Smart Keyboard.

But as we all said, the best is to wait and hope for the 10.2" will arrive soon, before any decision is made.

I agree the question is more around what screen size you want. If you want a big screen for a decent prize then get the pro. If you want something more portable get the basic iPad. Or even better wait for the new one which will probably come next month.

To try and answer your original question precisely, go with the 1st gen 12.9 iPP. Even considering the new iPad 7 gen. You will not be sad if you can get an old pro at a good price: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/anyone-still-using-first-gen-12-9”.2151485/ :D

But as EugW says, if you're gonna hold it surfing for 2 hrs, hands will get tired. Get a kb stand, rest on the cushion. Or buy a smaller size

I have a Pro 10.5 and a 12.9. Web browsing, unless it's sitting on a desk with keyboard or something, the 12.9 gets tiring to use after a while. Unless I need to use split view, I tend to use the smaller iPad more often for browsing.

I’ve had all the different iPad sizes and prefer to carry the 12.9 gen 1. It’s 4 years old and runs well for watching videos, web browsing, and writing. I’ve skipped over the 2018 model and I’m looking to buy the next 12.9 release.
