Figured I would share my Apple Store (Jacksonville, FL) experience. My wife placed her new iPad in one of her tote bags to take back and forth to work. When she got home we noticed a hairline crack from the lower left corner all the way to the top right corner. At the time it did not have the smart cover on it....go figure.

I did some research and decided that we would bite the bullet and get a replacement via Apple ($299 - 16gb/4g) b/c I didn't trust the 3rd party repairs and I couldn't stand looking at it.

Went to the apple store, spoke with an associate and waited to speak with one of the technicans. Showed him the iPad, explained the situation, and to my amazement his response was "We will replace it for free". Specifically, he said that their policy was to replace the iPads as long as the damage was not extensive (i.e. the screen was not completely shattered) and they had them in stock.

So I walked out with a refurbished iPad for no cost to me and my exsisting warrenty transferred. I thought I would share in case anyone else has the same issue. Don't automatically default to 3rd party. Give an apple store a shot.

Thanks Apple!
