I've had a new iPhone 13 Pro on order from Apple.com for several weeks. It was finally delivered this morning.

When I unboxed it, I was unable to turn it on. When I plugged it into the charger, it started charging for a few minutes. When I was finally able to turn it on, it showed battery level at 1%. It is still charging right now(almost 90%)

I have never seen a new iPhone that had a completely dead battery at time of unboxing. Usually the have anywhere from 20% to 80% battery available. (based on my personal experience with iPhone SE 1st gen, iPhone 7, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone XR, etc)

Is this any reason for concern?

Thanks!

I would give it a few days and see how it behaves. It’s cold at places right now which affects batteries and there’s an extended return period in place when buying from Apple.

probably not the cold.... weather in my area has been around 70 for the last few days. UPS tracking shows the phone came from Apple's distribution center in Louisville, KY and was overnighted to my city. Louisville has also been in the 60s for the last few days.

Will use it hard for the next few weeks. I guess if it appears normal, I'll keep it... if not... well.. it's only another 2 weeks to get a replacement 13 Pro. :)

From your description, it seems like the battery is not "dead", but completed depleted when you received it. I would fully charge the phone and use it for a few days to see how it retains battery, then decided to return it or not. You have 14 days, right?

Good point.. "depleted" was probably a more accurate description. After unboxing, I was not able to power it on. A "dead" battery implies not being able to charge it. :)

It has now finished charging and reached 100%. Everything seems to work fine.

Foxconn just forgot to turn your phone off after testing. Also someone used your device and it‘s been resealed. ?

Our iPhone 11 Pro Max's needed to be charged when we got them in February. It's just a natural thing where the battery depletes when just sitting over time.

Neither of our 11PMs have had any battery issues.

how do I look that up? (edit: found it.... based on the serial number, apparently production date was 2nd week of November)

thanks! :)
How are you able to tell? And are you certain? Because serial numbers are randomized so you wouldn't be able to tell what week it was build based on the serial number. Unless there's a website that can.

I usually look at Settings > Privacy > Analytics Data. As long as you don't connect it on PC/Mac, the diagnostics will retain till you do. So that's how I am able to find the production date.

I don't know how accurate this website is.... but that's what I used: https://en.tab-tv.com/?p=20811

Yea that only works on the old format that Apple used to use.

With the randomized serial number that Apple has begun using since iPads, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 (note: other models of the 12 did have the old format, only the lavender color did have the randomized serial number). Those won't work. Heck you could have someone with similar production week but completely random serial number.

yeah.. I just realized that it made no sense... pretty sure the 13 Pro was not made in 2015. :(

is there a new online tool that can look up the production date of current iPhones?

Unfortunately there isn't really a way other than going to the analytics data. But if you restored it as new or back up, those old diagnostics that was ran by the plant is gone.

oh well.. it's a 13 Pro, so can't be more than 3 or 4 months old, right? :)

although... I just talked to a rep at Apple and he said that it was probably "not normal" to have a totally depleted new iPhone 13 Pro. He couldn't do anything about having to wait another 2 weeks for a replacement... (and no, none of the 12 nearest Apple Stores have them at this time)

I definitely doubt it would be more than 3-4 month old, being that it's still high in demand.

Coming back to your dead battery out of the box. While it may not seem normal that it came out that way but it can happen but I don't think there's any real issue to worry about. Plus if the battery capacity drops to 79% before 1 year warranty is up, Apple will replace the battery for free at no charge.

I'd be surprised if 3utools would do it. Even Coconut battery app won't even detect lol IT used to on old format but on new format it will not.
Well 3utools seems pretty accurate. First laugh iPhone 13 PM was early Sept build and the current one I bought from Best Buy in mid October was built end of September I believe. I’ll have to connect it to check actual date again.

I see. Too bad 3utools only work on Windoz. I only have Mac.

I’m probably telling you something you already know, but make sure to enable “optimize battery charging” and keep an eye on the battery health.

I always keep optimize battery charging off because I have extremely irregular schedules. For example: had to wake up at 3AM this morning... but the day before that, it was 11AM.... then next Monday, it's back to 2PM

Do you work in production? That kind of sounds like a TV schedule a little bit. Anyway, optimize battery charging will learn your pattern and/or it will ask you when you need it to be charge. It’s pretty smart, it found patterns in my schedule that I didn’t even notice and my schedule is about like yours to some extent.
