Actually I think you have it the other way around, the 3G was more scratch resistant then the 3Gs because of the coating. The glass in the 3GS AFAIK is the same hard scratch resistant glass in the 3G but the coating is just that, a coating and prone to scratches.
I opted to buy a case with a cover on it (vaja ivolution gt) instead of a screen protector. I never had good luck with them in all of the years I owned a phone/pda.
