new iphone 4 user - how to join an existing family plan?

Hey guys, I'm looking to pre-order the iphone 4 to join an existing family plan. I'm a first time iphone and ATT customer.

1. Is this possible with the pre-order
2. Do I need to choose my iphone plan during my pre-order? If yes, how do I go about becoming a part of an existing family plan as a brand new ATT customer?

You will not be able to get unlimited data if that was your goal though

so the currently account holder of the family plan should order the iphone 4 for me? and then just add another line to the family plan?

would i be able to keep my old phone number if i do it this way?
