I set my iPhone Air up as a new phone (I like it clean and fresh, re-downloading and organising stuff).

I noticed the Always On display wasn't on and went into Display & Brightness settings and found it was turned off - not on by default. Not sure why this is, but once I turned it on it's worked great.
