New Iphone application that recognizes your clothes.

We are developing a new Iphone App, that will be able to recognize your friends clothes after you take a picture with your Iphone.
The idea is that the user will take a picture with his or her Iphone, marking with a finger which part of the picture to focus on and then selecting which type of clothe it is (shirt, trouser, etc, etc). the application will then search in the database for similar matches (at the moment we are working on 75% match or more) and list them. the user will then be able to see the make and model, along with where to buy it.

I would like to know what you all think of this concept?

as future aspects we are thinking of implementing an user response function for clothes that are not recognized in the database, so other users who recognized the piece on the picture will be able to write in the information.

another future aspect is to make it possible to directly buy the clothes online on the app, either at the brand/retailer homepage, or directly from the app.

What do you think of the possible future aspects....

If I'm taking pictures of clothes I already own - why would I need to know where of how to buy them

I think your app and what you intend is that you could snap photos of friends or whatnot and get that info. But then - couldn't you just ask a friend where they got it?

But the concept is very cool - and it's almost like a photographic version of red laser.

Thank you for the input, and yes I meant "your friends" and have edited it... Of course you can ask your friends, but maybe your friend have forgotten where he or she bought it, and you are also able to take a picture of someone you don't know.

Sounds like a neat app

Perhaps people could use it on themselves when they are trying clothes on at a store, and want to see where else it is sold, and for what price. I see a lot of potential in this app idea.

sounds like a great app..not sure the 'macrumors' crowd would be the ideal crowd..but as a fashion photographer, i could see this app (or at least this functionality) becoming very huge if you can get a very high percentage of matches. I'd suggest you not only develop the app but patent the idea if possible. I could see this easily being added to the numerous fashion apps, like vogue, style.com, etc..

It's a neat idea, though I'm not sure exactly how you would get the software to correctly identify a (probably bad) photo of a shirt while making out fine details in the design with the relatively low quality of the camera and correctly match it with an enormous amount of other pieces of clothing.

Did this idea go anywhere ? It seems promising, I would use something like this, if only as a cool contraption.
