A new iPhone battery with a metal casing should allow for higher energy density to deliver longer battery life, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims.

Alleged iPhone 16 Pro battery with new metal casing.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kuo said that Apple's adoption of a stainless steel casing for the iPhone's battery will allow for five to 10 percent higher cell density while remaining within safety limits, as well as meeting the requirements of new EU regulations. Alleged images of an iPhone 16 Pro battery with a metal casing leaked in late 2023 and The Information has since detailed Apple's work to simplify iPhone battery replacement starting with the iPhone 16.

New EU law requires smartphone manufacturers to ensure batteries can be replaced by owners using easily accessible tools by 2025. Apple plans to achieve this with the use of electrically induced adhesive debonding technology, allowing users to apply a low voltage of electricity to quickly dislodge the battery instead of finicky adhesive strips. This new battery replacement method is anticipated to debut in at least one iPhone 16 model later this year and could extend to all versions of the iPhone 17 next year.

Isn’t it more likely Apple will do this just to maintain the current battery life expectations even with such a change? Especially with Apple Intelligence looming?

The extra RAM and AI processing they're going to put in the phone is going to eat up the extra capacity for sure. That's why they're making the screens bigger - bigger screen means bigger phone means more room for battery.

Increased power density isn’t necessarily better if it means the battery wears out more quickly. There’s usually a compromise with these things.

Perhaps Apple have figured out that if they make batteries removable, they don’t have to last as long, and they can make more money selling replacements.

The way the iCompany incorporates more powerful batteries is to put in a smaller battery so the run time will be the same as previous models

16PM is rumored to have the same amount of RAM as 15 Pro's.

I wonder what happens to durability.

Every year we get rumours of stacked battery technology, has it ever happened? Did it ever come to the S24 range in the end? The rumours were hot and not a peep since release about it?

And more money...A $100+ increase for the higher end Pro models?

At least the EU doing something useful for the Rest of the World again...

Can we please stop reminding people the X was formerly Twitter. Anyone who cares already knows

No because "on X" doesn't make any damn sense. People don't know because it's a confusing name. Did you call Prince by that symbol he changed his name to?
