New Iphone- Can I switch SIM from old iPhone

Have a new phone and wondering if I could swap the SIM from the old one, still active and then sync . Or if there is another process that needs to be follwed I would appreciate the help.

If you switch the sims and then connect to itunes i believe there is an option to retrieve data rather than going through the entire activation process again
