New iPhone problems?

Just a quick question that I hope anyone here can resolve

Is it normal for me to turn the iPhone 3GS (on Orange) off and then back on and then it loses signal and will not find it again?

In order for me to get full signal and a working data connection etc I have to -

put a Orange sim card into any Orange phone
Take that sim card and put it into the iPhone so it activates
Take that sim card out and put my own sim card into the iPhone and I then get full signal etc.

Seems extremely weird to me

Time to upgrade!

You can still get a good price for your 3GS on eBay to get the new iPhone.

Thats about the best advice I can give ya.
