Do you think that if you buy an new mac through the education store and you get the free ipod touch that it will be the new one released today? Or the now old version? Could be a great 6 day window to buy and new mac and get a new version of the ipod touch...maybe.

The whole point of the free iPod offer is to clear old stock. They will give you last year's model.
If you read the fine print on the free iPod Touch for students, it clearly states that the version given is the 2nd gen, not the 3rd and definitely not the 4th gen.
the new iPods won't arrive in stores until after the 7th aka the day the promotion ends. that is the reason behind the week delay.
I just read the "fine print" on the terms and conditions and it confirms what has been said. It seems as though you can get any ipod and that they simply offer a refund up to 199 for any of the qualified models. I may not be reading it correctly though...
