Poking around in Apple's iTunes version xml shows that there is a 2.1.1 firmware for iPod touch with build number 5F138 vs 2.1's 5F137.

It appears it is for model iPod2,1 which looks to be the new iPod touch announced yesterday.

Here is the direct link to the firmware restore file:

I am not recommending that you try it out on your first gen touch but it is there to satisfy your curiosity.

The itunes version checking mechanism is here: http://itunes.com/version

hmmmm interesting I downloaded the update last night and have iPod1,1_2.1_5F137_Restore

turns out 2.1.1 is the firmware for 2nd gen iPod Touch

That would appear to be a correct assumption...

Well I've just got back from my local Apple store (Leicester, UK) and much to my amazement they had the new nanos and also the new touch on display!

The one I played with was running 2.1.1 version software (strange because when I updated my 1st generation touch this morning it said it was running 2.1 so I guess they have slightly different versions for the 2 generations).

Anyone wanna try this on a normal iPod touch?

Dude, that would be insane. Why would anyone want to do that? I find it unlikely it will magic your old iPod touch into the new one. It might magic it into a dead one though.

What's the worse that could happen updating your iPod touch first generation to 2.1.1?

It could screw up, yeah. But there's bound to be a user who'll find out what the main differences are.

(Not me, though o.o)

OK, since no one else was brave enough to try, I downloaded and tried installing the 2.1.1 firmware on my gen 1 Touch.

Didn't work. The update crashed half way through with a cryptic error, leaving my Touch in a mindless state that I had to restore back to reality with the 2.1 firmware.

Now you know. Don't try this at home. ;)

Reaaaaaaally nice it would restore though! That's like the best possible outcome! (Well, aside from it telling you ahead of time it won't work, and not giving a cryptic error.)
