I smashed the display a couple of years ago. Insurance paid out, but I used the money towards a new Intel 2020 MBA instead.
My 15" MBP remained mainly unused although I'd plug my TV into it via HDMI just to watch occasional videos. I opened it up and disconnected the video cable so that it would never boot to the (faulty) internal screen which made booting into recovery etc much easier as it always went straight to HDMI.
I played with Mavericks for a while (using OCLP as it's unsupported) but got bored with it.
A few days ago I wiped it and installed Ubuntu (v 22.10) which, although I'd never used it before, I know enough Unix to feel comfortable with it. I then installed VirtualBox and currently have Windows 11 running inside it.
So, single boot (Ubuntu) and Windows within a VM. I've no real use for either of those OSes but I enjoyed the challenge.
MBP runs really well for a 9 year old machine.
