As a video editor I cannot see any reason to keep my iMac Pro. New M1 MacBook totally destroys in video editing.
I purchased a 10 Core iMac Pro, 64GB Ram and Vega 64x about 24 months ago. I edit 4K 120p footage from the Sony A7SIII. With the iMac Pro I had to encode everything to ProRes or Proxy before I could start working on the edit.
The iMac Pro won't even play the footage on the timeline straight out of camera without major stuttering, its basically impossible to edit that Sony codec on, unless converting to proxy / ProRes.
Yesterday I picked up my new MBP M1 Max 16" and started working on a new project. Im absolutely blown away that this thing can edit everything natively, including 120p 4K 10 bit files straight off the bat. Multiple layers of footage with colour / effects / text tracking in FCPX all work and edit like butter! All off the battery. And connected to the LG 5K display its an editors dream.
Anyone looking for an editing powerhouse I'd recommend this without hesitation. If you are a pro and this will save you time then go for it, its a no brainer.
(anyone want to buy a 10 core iMac Pro?!?!?)
