Why is this relatively new battery shown as needs replacing? Can a battery spoil if you run resource intensive app on mac and it overheat?

You just got unlucky with the battery; nothing you've done to cause the issue. Lithium technology can be very intermittent as it's the closest thing to a living component you'll find in a computer. That said, anything can fail or be DOA: an SSD, RAM, dead pixels on the screen...

Just pop into an Apple Store or call Apple at your earliest convenience. They'll get that sorted for you ASAP. :)
