new mac mini, can i transfer everything from a wrecked old one?

hello,
today i bought a new mac mini.
i have had a mac mini for the past 8 months now, and of course its filled with information.
i never did a time machine backup and the old one is wrecked (that's why i bought a new one).
my question is:
can i use time machine to backup my old HD (which is now connected trough an external enclosure, and transfer the image to the new one?

You can just use Migration Assistant to copy data over from the old Mac Mini's HDD in that external enclosure.
