Hi,

I have just set up a brand new Mac mini M1 with a LG IPS HD display. I am noticing that fonts are not crisp and appear very pixelated. The colours also seem off for some of the icons and in general things don't seem clear.

I have read that some other people are having similar issues with displays and fonts. As this seems to be happening to other people is it starting to become a known issue or could there be something wrong with the mini or the display?

So far I had enabled font smoothing through the terminal, there aren't any settings that help on the monitor itself and Im in the process of updating Big Sur to 11.1.

Thanks.

That's on every non 4k+ display it seems as Big Sur has disabled sub-pixel antialiasing and now Windows has better font rendering than OS X, i never thought that day would come.
Thanks for your reply.

Is this something that Apple are likely to address and would the solution be to use a 4k monitor?

If we are loud enough about it then perhaps they will, or maybe some third-party software vendor can figure out a solution, it should be an option in the Accessibility tab as it really hurts people without great eyesight, and of course the pockets and workflows of those who aren't targeting 4k as it's still a tiny user base.

Its such a shame because I have been using this beautiful machine for about three hours and its giving me a headache.

Agree. I hope that if more people make noise about this issue Apple will make some changes in the Big Sur code. Not everyone is able to get new screens.

I am using an old 2011 Apple Thunderbolt 27" display and it works perfect.

Also have a second display connected - 4K 32" and it also is perfect.

Tested it on a 24" Apple Cinema LED Display and it was perfect too...

Try the newest version of Tinkertool:

There is an Font Smoothing tab, maybe it will help.

It's frustrating beyond belief that Apple is just sort of saying "f u" to those with sub 4k displays.

There are lots of us using 1440p (or lower) resolutions still, particularly if we use the monitor with multiple systems.

The Apple of old would have cared about this more.
It's very disheartening.

There is nothing such as "Apple of old". This a company, where they are doing everything for profit. Most companies woudl do the same, don't you think?

Can you imagine, you buy a car and cannot change the battery yourself, because the software in the car needs aproval from the carmaker?
