Not sure if this is relevant to the Mac Mini M1 hardware or to BigSur 11.1 or something else. A ViewSonic VX2476 24-inch full HD IPS screen is attached from one of the two thunderbolt ports to the screen's displayport port.

Also tried with the Hyper terminal app but same problem.

Tried turning off font smoothing via command line but no change.

Screen also has an HDMI and a VGA inputs but haven't tried since I don't have the cable for the former or the adapter for the latter.

What can I try?

Thanks a lot

I wish I had good news for you.

I returned my M1 Mini, but before I did, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the displayed image was so "soft" and just "not right".

I tried DisplayPort, HDMI, several adapters and cables for each and I never got it looking how I knew it should look on this monitor that I've had for many many years and used with many machines.

To this day, I plug in two different machines to it all the time and nothing, ever, has looked as bad as the M1 Mini did plugged into it.

I got the M1 Mini recently and the image on my monitor via HDMI is just as sharp and clear as the one from the Intel Mini I have and the various PCs I've used with it.

Good to hear. Wish I could have figured out what was up with mine.
It was particularly noticeable on the desktop wallpapers for some reason.

Between this, sleep issues and Bluetooth issues...I honestly wonder if mine was simply a bad unit

Terminal looks normal on my M1 Mini with 11.1 connected via HDMI.

Not that anyone has gone there yet in this thread...but please believe us when we are saying we had issues with this.

For some reason the “M1 Apple defense force” is out on patrol on all M1 discussions.

They are whipping out millions of units.
It’s not abnormal for issues to appear - sucks to be on the receiving end

Hey @turbineseaplane, sad to know you had problems and yes they need to be acknowledged and understood, not only dismissed as fantasy or bad luck.

Hey @mikeschr thanks for chiming in ... what kind of monitor are you using? (resolution, model) Thanks

@turbineseaplane Now that you mention it this morning I tried waking up from sleep to no avail. Trackpad, keyboard and even nudging the power button did not manage to wake up. I had to long press the power button and do an hard power-off and re-power. So is this a known issue too?

On the sleep issue I have done some experiments and it looks like it fails only when you sleep through the night. For shorter stretches it seems to work.

For the terminal fonts problem I can report that connecting via HDMI does not make the terminal fonts any better and maybe makes the rest of the graphics just a tad less crisp than when using Displayport.

Will try opening a ticket with Apple.
